Despite being a well-known phenomenon, the mechanism by which platinum gains a magnetic moment by proximity to a ferromagnetic (FM) thin film remains unknown. We aim to determine how the magnitude, and spatial extent, of proximity polarisation in Pt relates to the interface magnetisation in an adjacent CoFeTaB (CFTB) FM layer. Setting the Curie temperature of CFTB below room-temperature, we will measure PNR as a function of temperature where the CFTB layer is in either paramagnetic, or at various points in the ferromagnetic phase; each having different magnetisation. The magnetisation in CFTB at the interface will be extracted from fitting temperature dependent PNR measurements to obtain the magnetic scattering length density depth profile. Information on the proximity polarisation in Pt will be extracted from complementary X-ray resonant magnetic scattering measured on the same sample.
