Data underlying Chapter 4 of the PhD thesis of Mengwei Li (Utrecht University), "Lipid-Mediated Control of Thermally Induced Shape Transformations in Liquid Crystal Droplets".
Samples. Droplets of 4-cyano-4'-octylbiphenyl (8CB) doped with 1, 2 or 5 wt% monoolein, dispersed in aqueous solutions of 1,2-dilauroyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoglycerol (DLPG), 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoglycerol (DOPG) or their 1:1 mixture, and observed during heating on a temperature-controlled microscope stage.
Contents.
Polarized optical microscopy images (AmScope PZ620, AmScope MU1803 camera, 40x objective) of the droplets in lipid-free buffer; in DLPG at 0.01, 0.1, 0.5, 1, 5 and 10 mM; in DOPG at 1, 5 and 10 mM; and in a 1:1 DLPG:DOPG mixture at 1, 5 and 10 mM, each at monoolein contents of 1, 2 and 5 wt%.
Interfacial tension of 5CB against buffer and against DLPG and DOPG solutions at 0.5 and 1 mM, measured by the pendant-drop method (DataPhysics OCA contact angle meter, SCA 20 software).
