Data for "Persisting effects of jaw clenching on dynamic steady-state balance"

DOI

The research project "Influence of the craniomandibular system on human postural control" is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The aim of the project is to investigate for the first time the influences of controlled motor activity of the craniomandibular system (CMS) on human postural control in predictable and non-predictable dynamic situations. For this purpose, the movements of participants during different dynamic equilibrium tasks are recorded in the kinematic and muscular level, and analyzed using methods that are directly derived from current models of motor control. With this interdisciplinary research approach, previous research work will be continued in a targeted manner in order to comprehensively understand the influence of the CMS on postural control processes.

In this experiment, 48 physically active adults aged between 18 and 30 years are tested. The experimental design includes two measurement times with a two-week intervention phase inbetween. A stability platform (Lafayette Instrument Company, Indianapolis, US) is used to evaluate the postural dynamic steady-state stability, as well as for balance training. As in Experiment 1, a RehaBite® is also used here for the same purposes.
