Our previous in situ study of benzene hydrogenation by Pt/MCM-41 (RB1220486) allowed us to monitor the transformation of the total scattering pattern as a function of time (reaction coordinate). We were able to pinpoint specific features in the measured F(Q) and extract kinetics for their evolution, and assign these kinetics to specific length scale changes within the system, showing the potential of such techniques in the acquisition of complete structural and kinetic data for this type of system. A follow-up proposal (RB1310475) has been granted beamtime to examine toluene hydrogenation. This proposal focuses on a more simplistic reaction (hydrogenation of butanone to butanol) with the emphasis on resolving the pore liquid structure and species composition as a function of time, again extracting the kinetics of key processes. Complementary NMR studies will also be undertaken.
