The hybrids Quercus x hispanica 'Lucombeana' (Quercus cerris x suber) at Mata Nacional do Vimeiro, Portugal

DOI

This dataset identifies Quercus x hispanica 'Lucombeana' (Quercus cerris x suber) hybrids and their offspring in an experimental field (plots 6 and 21a) at Mata Nacional do Vimeiro, Alcobaça Portugal. This experimental field began to be established in 1930s, by Vieira Natividade, a Portuguese agronomist and forester. In 2019, for the living hybrids, the location (geographic coordinates), female parent identification, sowing year and biometric characterization (total height and breast height diameter) were recorded. In plot 6, there are thirteen trees planted in 1933 from seed obtained in the Cambridge Botanic Gardens in England. A total of 183 living hybrids were installed, between 1961 and 1965, in four different sub-plots from plot 21a: 52, 53, 54 and 55. They are progenies of some of the hybrid mothers initially planted (mother trees 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15 and 17) from plot 6. In sub-plots 52-54, the plants were initially distributed in lines in a spacing of 2.5 x 2.5 meters, according to their respective mother tree. In sub-plot 55, the last one to be installed (1964 and 1965), the seeds were simply sown in a spacing 0.3 x 0.3 meters without identification of their parent origin.
