Effect of multiple head groups on surfactant behaviour

DOI

We would like to elucidate the effect of multiple headgroups present in surfactants having only a single hydrophobic alkyl chain. The size ratio between the polar headgroup and the hydrophobic ¿tail¿ determines surfactant properties such as the solubility in aqueous solution and aggregation behavior. The aggregation behavior of surfactants in solution is also modulated by parameters such as concentration, temperature, pH and the presence of additives, such as electrolytes. In the present proposal, these effects will be investigated using SANS, and compared with results obtained from DLS, NMR, pKa measurement, tensiometry and conductivity measurements. All these results together will give a better understand of amphoteric molecules in aqueous solutions.
