For the first time, the research team aim to use INS to characterise a series of candidate methane reforming catalysts. Recent studies have shown that modification of traditional industrial grade catalysts can be made which lead to substantial improvements in operational performance, namely minimal deactivation. However, the enhanced performance is dependent on preparative procedures and this study aims to examine how specific preparative methods lead to the formation of distinct hydrocarbonaceous overlayers, which in turn directly affect the process chemistry. TOSCA will be used to ¿screen¿ a suite of 12 catalyst samples to obtain the vibrational spectra of the hydrocarbonaceous overlayer associated with each sample in the 30-1600 cm-1 region. The 1600-4000 cm-1 region will be studied using the MAPS spectrometer. These latter studies are described within a separate application.
