Organic matter decomposition Data in the DRYvER project

Information on decomposition rates, standing stocks and chemical composition of DOM and POM collected from flowing waters, disconnected pools or dry riverbeds across the six European DRNs in three sampling campaigns. Basic environmental data of river reaches, flow state during sampling, and the necessary metadata (dates, times and temperature) for the estimate of decomposition rates were also included. The characterization of POM was based on: leaf litter decomposition rates, standing stocks and C, N and P content for CPOM and FPOM. The characterization of DOM was based on: DOC decomposition rates, DOC concentration and spectroscopic measurements to describe the chemical composition. In particular, the following absorbance and fluorescence indexes were estimated. Based on absorbance: values of absorbance at 254, 300, 665 and 700 nm; the ratios of absorbance between 250 to 365 nm (E2:E3), and between 465 to 665 nm (E4:E6); the spectral slope within the log-transformed absorption spectra range between 275-295 nm (S275-295), 350-400 nm (S350-400), and 300-700 nm (S300-700); and the ratio of S275-295 to S350-400 (SR). Based on absorbance: Fluorescence index (FI), the humification index (HIX), the freshness index (BIX) and the intensity of theoretical humic and protein-like peaks (b, t, a, m, c peaks). Environmental variables included were: the cumulative sum of average temperature along the decomposition experiments, discharge, mean wetted width, mean depth thalweg, water physico-chemistry (electrical conductivity, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen concentration and dissolved oxygen saturation), and nutrient concentration in water (Cl-, NH4+,PO43-, NO3-, SO42-, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+).
