Net Community Production (NCP), photosynthesis, and respiration measured in Georgia estuaries using two complementary methods

DOI

This dataset comprises measurements of Net Community Production (NCP), photosynthesis, and respiration collected in Georgia estuaries using two complementary methods: in situ samples with the PIGI (Pressure of In-situ Gas Instrument) system and 24-hour bottle incubations. The purpose of the dataset is to understand how the PIGI system functions in estuarine environments where its assumptions are more challenging to meet. The PIGI dataset includes continuous dissolved oxygen and associated physical parameters (temperature, salinity, etc.) collected from a floating dock on the Wilmington River (31.9624°N 81.0122°W). Data collection occurred in June, September and December of 2024. The has a temporal resolution of 10 seconds. NCP was calculated following Izett and Tortell (2020), from in situ oxygen and nitrogen gas data supporting meteorological measurements. Minor updated to the above-mentioned method are explained in the related manuscript. Data are provided in tabular format and include time, latitude, longitude, depth, and derived fluxes. The bottle incubation dataset consists of discrete measurements collected daily over the same time frame as the PIGI dataset. Surface water (1 m depth) was incubated in triplicate light and dark bottles over 24-hour periods to estimate respiration, photosynthesis, and NCP. Parameters are reported in units of mmol O₂ m⁻² d⁻¹, with associated standard deviations. These incubations were done to provide a comparison with the PIGI system. The datasets are suitable for regional biogeochemical modeling, productivity assessments, and algorithm training. Limitations may include tidal and diel variability for incubation results, and potential advection effects on in situ measurements.
