Species of the genus Gambierdiscus produce toxins such as ciguatoxins and maitotoxins which causes ciguatera fish poisoning. Gambierdiscus australes is a potent producer of Maitotoxins which are the largest non biopolymer compounds known. To date, there has been no gene expression data available on this species. This transcriptome sequencing project was aimed at identifying genes involved in toxin biosynthesis.
