Investigating the muon radical in Sulphur

DOI

Recent muon level-crossing measurements in the stable orthorhombic alpha-phase of sulphur indicate the existence of a radical state, with an interesting temperature evolution. We plan to complement this with measurements on a single crystal sample, to identify the symmetry axes of the radical relative to the S8 molecule. Measurements will be at low temperature where the hyperfine constant has its full value and at around 200K where the hyperfine constants have scaled down by about 50%.
