This dataset was constructed in the context of KITLV's research project 'Palm Oil Conflicts and Access to Justice in Indonesia' (https://www.kitlv.nl/palm-oil-conflicts-and-access-to-justice-in-indonesia/), and contains both quantitative and qualitative data concerning the trajectories and outcomes of 150 conflicts between palm oil companies and communities in Indonesia. This deposit contains 150 detailed case reports of these conflicts, as well as two dataset that was constructed by coding these case reports:a. A 'case coding dataset' containing data on in terms of key characteristics of these conflicts - such as the character and number of protest events, the use of violence, arrests, the usage and outcomes of conflict resolution mechanisms, as well as assessments of community leaders of the outcomes of these conflicts.b. A 'protest events and claim statement dataset' containing data on protest events that took place during the course of these 150 conflicts, derived from the case reports and newspaper articles. This data set also contains 248 claim statements from community representatives made during these protest events, and reported in newspapers.A team of, in total, 19 researchers traced the emergence, chronology and outcomes of 150 such conflicts by collecting written sources (newspaper articles, online sources, government and NGO documents and academic studies) as well as engaging in 283 interviews with community leaders. As part of these efforts we used the complete newspaper archives of four regional newspapers – Padang Express, Pontianak Pos, Kalteng Pos and Tribun Pekanbaru – for the years 2010 to 2019. We used these materials to write 150 extensive ‘case reports’ of each case on the basis of a shared template. We subsequently coded the trajectories of conflicts in terms of key characteristics - for example, type of grievances, involvement of conflict resolution mechanism, type and number of protests, etc.A supplemental file describes this documentation process that led to this dataset.
