FEMP database is a part of the FEMP project (Multidimensional Performance Analysis of the Forest Ecosystems: a Micro-economic Approach). This project aims to develop economic instruments in evaluating the multidimensional performance of the forest ecosystems. We then use these instruments to assess empirically the economic and the environmental performance of French region’s forest systems. For this propose, we built FEMP dataset by using two main statistic sources: the ministry of Agriculture and Food and the National Institute of Geographic and Forest Information.
The FEMP dataset contains economic accounts of the inputs and outputs of the logging and sawmill sectors. It also contains environmental indicators on forest ecosystems. The dataset covers the period from 2010 to 2019, with data for each of the twelve French continental administrative regions. Specifically, our data include 240 observations across all periods and regions (2010–2019), with two distinct activities for each administrative region: logging and sawmilling. In terms of the variables, we consider one economic output, three economic inputs, one environmental input and one environmental output. Both environmental inputs and outputs are related to positive externalities. The economic output is total income in the logging and sawmill sectors (in thousands of euros in 2015), while the economic inputs are, respectively, (i) labour costs, (ii) operational expenses, and (iii) fixed assets in the two sectors. Regarding the environmental components, the environmental output is the production provided by a sustainably managed certified forest, and the environmental input is deadwood.
