The purpose of this study was to contact workers at the point in time when they had just reached a decision with respect to their situation in the labour market, and to try to ascertain what factors were affecting this decision. It was concerned only with workers who were completely new to the company, i.e. starters who had transferred from associated companies were excluded.

Variables Information was collected on previous employment (including occupation and industry and reason for leaving), whether they will earn more in their new job, details of their new journey to work (including moving house and changes to the length and cost of their journey), and source of information regarding their new job).
