Our long-term aim is a detailed study of the Oriental Arms & Armour in the Wallace Collection, London, which contains nearly one thousand items and is one of the most important collections of Indian arms and armour outside the subcontinent. We want to investigate in depth the quality and the kind of steel used for their production, and the different mechanical and thermal processes that were used in their manufacture. We already measured several Indo-Persian blades from the Wallace Collection in order to determine their phase distribution and microstructure. We propose to study a second set of 16 samples in a continuation experiment. The composition and microstructure of the steel in the 16 selected samples will be a starting point for the classification of the Oriental Arms & Armour section of the Wallace Collection, and indeed, other museums.
