Structural Phase Characterization of Iron Stone Mesopotamian Objects from the Rijksmuseum of Antiqities (RMO - Leiden)

DOI

Mesopotamian iron oxide objects in the form of Roll seals and Weight are typical for the Old Babylonian Period (ca. 2000-1600 B.C.). In the museums they are usually cataloged as hematie objects. In earlier study of the collection of the NINO (Leiden), The Allard Pierson Museum and ironstone objects from the /syrian site of Tal Bazi, we found the mineral make up as major hematite, hematite/magnetite, goethite and black . In combination with neutron tomograghy, TOF diffraction, PGAA and X-ray synchrotron XRF, XRD abd XANES we found indications for different types of the sedimentary base of the objects. The RMO collection shows also the different ironstones mineral types. We propose to finish our characterisation of the iron stone Mesopotamian seal and weights from Dutch museum collections on INES by determining the mineral phase contect their objects.
