The purpose of this survey was to obtain a representative picture of the institutions and conduct of industrial relations in British manufacturing industry in 1978. Apart from obtaining a `map' of industrial relations institutions, this survey was intended to permit the testing of a number of hypotheses on strike patterns, bargaining practices, and trade union organisation.
