Investigation of the relevant thermodynamic parameters for the production of Solid methane

DOI

With fantastic flux gains over its liquid conterpart, a solid methane moderator is essential to the newly built Second Target Station at ISIS. Unfortunately, it is notoriously difficult to achieve an operating regime with a solid methane moderator as confirmed with the failure of the first two decoupled moderators running on TS-2. Recent tests with pressure gauges placed on the decoupled moderator itself suggest that some of the pressure rises are not due to hydrogen produced by the the radiation field but likely due to the experimental conditions under which the solid is made and possibly the presence of the aluminium foam in the moderator. In this experiment, we propose to use a cell with a gas handling rig to try and reproduce the conditions inside the moderator and monitor the phases obtained using diffraction. This is a first test to investigate different cooling & heating regimes.
