Sulfobetaines are zwitterionic surfactants where the headgroup charges are arranged in the opposite manner to those found in phosphotidylcholine lipid headgroups. Sulfobetaines are relatively non-toxic and are being considered for drug delivery and biomaterials applications. We therefore wish to study the interactions between model lipid membranes of DMPC with insoluble sulfobetaines. We have measured X-ray reflectivity from these systems but require neutron reflectivity data with contrast variation to be able to gain information on the details of headgroup interactions in these systems. We have synthesised novel double-tail sulfobetaine surfactants, and their corresponding single tail versions in our lab, so have both deuterated and hydrogenated surfactants available. These NR measurements will enable publication of this work, and form an initial study in ongoing work.
