Spin ordering in the iridium oxide pyrochlore A2Ir2O7

DOI

Here we propose to search for magnetic order in 3 variants of the A2Ir2O7 (A=Y, Nd, and Lu) system. A fundamentally new, moderately-coupled, electronic ground state has been proposed for this class of 5d electron materials and has been dubbed a Dirac semi-metal---where linearly dispersing ¿Dirac-like¿ electronic states occur within a three dimensional magnetic solid. These helical spin states are connected by Fermi arcs stretching between Dirac points within the 3D Brilloiun zone thereby rendering a unique topological Dirac metal state with a symmetry-driven magnetocaloric effect. One of the key predictions of this new Dirac semi-metallic state is a unique pattern of magnetic order in which the iridium moments within each corner sharing tetrahedra either all point inward within the tetrahedron or outward. We propose to search for such a magnetic ground state.
