Two lead roundshot have been recovered during archaeological field survey at the Towton battlefield site (1461 AD). Energy selective neutron tomography has shown there are texture features in the objects. We propose to quantify the lead texture in the Towton roundshot. It is notable that there are structures present at all in these objects, as in theory lead re-crystallises at just above room temperature. It appears that there are in fact a variety of texture features present. We hope to be able to relate these to the manufacture and use of the munitions. We propose to measure an experimentally cast replica lead shot, to compare with the archaeological ones. We also propose to determine the carbon content of the iron block that is inside one of the Towton roundshot. We request 1 day of beamtime on GEM.
