Fine Scale Structure in Cometary Dust Tails - Figure 6.5 - Radial view of C/2002 V1 getting hit by a CME (as seen by SOHO LASCO C3 with difference enhancement)

DOI

Views of C/2002 V1 NEAT from SOHO LASCO C3, taken with the clear filter and enhanced as temporal difference images. The field of view of the instrument has been projected into the orbital plane of the comet, where it is shown in an unravelled radial plot. Phase angle isolines are also shown. The CME hits the comet and its dust tail at a phase angle of between 80 and 85 degrees, close to the limb where the filament eruption was observed.
