The focus of this project was on the community consequences of out-migration and the migration experiences of individuals. The objectives of the research were: to analyse out-migration data from the 1991 Census; to test the value of the Register of Sasines for migration research; to describe and evaluate the characteristics of out-migration, the destinations involved, the decision-making processes at work, the consequences for rural communities and the experiences of individual outmigrants; to ascertain why, in an era of counter-urbanisation, out-migration of the young continues; to identify important issues requiring innovative rural policy-making.

Main Topics:

The data relates to 212 individual out-migrants from the North Lewis and Roxburgh areas of Scotland, all resident elsewhere in the UK. Information includes demographic and socio-economic characteristics at time of contact and when migrated, lifetime mobility flows and decision-making influences, attitudinal information about out-migration in general, current place of residence and donor area.

No sampling (total universe)

100% sample of traced out-migrants.
