Concentric eyewalls (CEs) and associated eyewall replacements play key roles in tropical cyclone (TC) intensity and structure change. A long-term dataset of CEs is highly desirable for the TC research community. Based on long-term (1991-2020) global satellite observations and deep learning algorithm for image classification, we construct a global-coverage CE dataset, including 611 CE snapshots of 311 storms during 1991-2020 (30 years), documented with serial ID (SID), time, location, intensity, translation speed and direction, and distance to land. The CE dataset is based on tropical cyclone best track data (International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardship version4, IBTrACS v4) and brightness temperature (TB) observations from multiple PMW sensors, including Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I, F11 (1991-2000), F13 (1995-2009), F14 (1997-2008), F15 (1999-2011)), the Special Sensor Microwave Imager and Sounder (SSMIS, F17 (2007-2020)), and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI 1997-2015).
The CE dataset consists of 611 CE snapshots of 311 storms. For ease of use and long-term preservation, data files in both MATLAB and NetCDF formats are provided. Data for each storm (each snapshot) possessing CE structures is saved into a mat file (a nc file). The MATLAB files are named by SID (same as in IBTrACS v4) and the NetCDF files are named by SID and snapshot serial number.Fields in each mat or nc file are shown as below:time: time of each snapshot in the ISO format as coordinated universal time (UTC)lmi: peak 1-minute maximum sustained wind speed achieved by the storm during its lifetime (knots)intensity: 1-minute maximum sustained wind speed at the time of each snapshot (knots)longitude: longitude of the storm center at the time of each snapshot (degree)latitude: latitude of the storm center at the time of each snapshot (degree)speed: translation speed of the storm at the time of each snapshot (meter per second)direction: translation direction of the storm at the time of each snapshot (degree), measured clockwise from the Northdistance2land: distance from the storm center to land at the time of each snapshot (kilometer)tb: 401*401 field of brightness temperature for each snapshot with 8°×8° areal coverage in latitude/longitude (Kelvin)tb_lat: latitude of gridded brightness temperature observations (degree)tb_lon: longitude of gridded brightness temperature observations (degree)
