Rhenium and Osmium analyses from ODP Leg 174AX, Bass River site, New Jersey Shelf, North Atlantic

DOI

Rhenium and osmium isotopic ratios and concentrations were determined by combining isotope dilution with negative thermal ionisation (N-TIMS) techniques using a ThermoScientific Triton at Durham University (UK). The analyses followed sample preparation utilising Carius-tube digestion of the samples with Cr(VI)O3-H2SO4, purification of osmium by established solvent extraction and microdistillation methods, and rhenium purification by single-bead anion chromatography following treatment by sodium hydroxide and acetone (Selby and Creaser, 2003; Cumming et al., 2013).DROsS (50 pg) standard values (n=23): 187Os/188Os averaged 0.16075±0.00016 (1σ), consistent with the running average value of 0.16095±0.00053 (1σ) for the lab (n=424).Re standard (125 pg) values (n=19): 187Re/185Re averaged 0.59820±0.00082 (1σ), consistent with the running average value of 0.59861±0.00156 (1σ) for the lab (n=512). Four blanks were measured through the analyses carried out in this study, giving 187Os/188Os ratios averaging 0.16±0.05 (1σ), Re contents averaging 19.4±2.0 pg (1σ), and Os contents averaging 0.07±0.01 pg (1σ).The initial 187Os/188Os (Os(i)) values for the sediments as they were deposited at 94 Ma were calculated using the following equation: 187Os/188Osinitial = 187Os/188Osmeasured - (187Re/188Osmeasured (EXP(λt)-1)) where λ is the decay constant of 187Re (1.666e−11 yr−1; Smoliar et al., 1996), and t is 94.000000 yr Smoliar, M.I., Walker, R.J. and Morgan, J.W., 1996, Re-Os ages of group IIA, IIIA, IVA, and IVB iron meteorites.
