Investigation of low temperature magnetism in vanadium dioxide compounds

We propose an in depth study of the low temperature local magnetic environment in vanadium dioxide compounds using longitudinal and zero field muon spin relaxation measurements. This is a direct follow up to RB 1320350, the main goal of which was to provide an initial survey investigating the muon (muonium) states, diffusive characteristics in VO2 compounds. The proposed measurements will focus specifically on the low temperature region where we have found evidence an antiferromagnetic phase or an additional mu site that may lead to muonium formation. These measurements will characterize fluctuations from the local magnetic environment and any species of muonium that may be present in this region. Further study on these compounds will provide possible insight into the fundamental mechanisms contributing to the metal to semiconducting transition and low temperature magnetism.
