Bodendegradation und Waldvernichtung: Zwei Ursachen für die Gefährdung der Biodiversität

DOI

Soil degradation and forest destruction - two causes for the threat to biodiversity: The soils of our earth are the basis of all terrestrial life. Soils regulate the water balance, supply plants and animals with nutrients, store carbon, filter water and are themselves full of life. With all the organisms, soils fulfil elementarily important functions. But life below ground is just as threatened as above. The same applies to the forests of this earth. They are similarly diverse as the soils and fulfil similar functions. Soils and forests are grouped together in the so-called LULUCF sector (Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry) as potential sinks for CO2. And both habitats are also true »sources« in terms of biodiversity. For example, the much-cited handful of soil can contain more living organisms than there are people on earth. Intensive land use, land sealing, soil erosion and the excessive use of chemicals are affecting soils and forests alike. This often goes unnoticed. This is also due to the fact that this threat still receives too little attention in politics and society. In order to meet the urgency of soil protection, rapid political action is necessary and binding legal frameworks are required. A larger share of the funds available for the common European agricultural policy must be used more specifically for soil protecting measures.
