Neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering study on NdT2Al10 (T= Ru and Os)

We have investigated the magnetic structure and crystal field excitations (CEF) of CeT2Al10 (T=Os and Ru). The observed magnetic moment along the c-axis does not agree with that predicted based on the single ion crystal field anisotropy and suggests the role of anisotropic two ion exchanges in determining the direction of the moments. The smaller anisotropy observed in NdT2Al10 indicates that the CEF effect in NdT2Al10 is weaker than that in CeT2Al10 in spite of the same crystal structure. Therefore, in order to obtain a detained understanding of the role of CEF anisotropy, two ion anisotropic exchanges, Kondo effect and gap formation for the unconventional behavior of the moment in CeT2Al10, we propose here to investigate magnetic structure and the CEF excitations of NdT2Al10 (T=Os and Ru) by the neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering measurements.
