We sequenced transcriptomes (RNAseq) from five species of electric fish. We performed RNAseq on skeletal muscle and electric organ from the species Sternopygus macrurus, Eigenmannia virescens, Malapterurus electricus, and Brienomyrus brachyistius. From Electrophorus electricus, we performed RNAseq on brain, spinal cord, heart, skeletal muscle, main electric organ, Sachs' electric organ, Hunter's electric organ, and kidney. With these data we provide the first comprehensive molecular analysis of electric organs in electric fishes. Additionally, we used these data the molecular basis for the convergent evolution of electric organs.
