Semantic Timber Construction and Robotic Fabrication Knowledge Graph Dataset

DOI

This dataset accompanies the paper A Semantic Framework for Linking Building Design, Material Data, and Robotic Fabrication in Timber Construction. The dataset supports the reproducibility of a semantic framework that links building geometry, timber material properties, and robotic fabrication information through an ontology-driven knowledge graph.

It includes RDF/Turtle datasets, OWL/Turtle ontology files, SPARQL query examples, CSV material datasets, a Rhino 3D building model, and a Grasshopper workflow used to generate RDF from the Rhino geometry/model.

The case study represents a prefabricated timber building with 160 timber building element instances, including columns, beams, glulam beams, walls, inner walls, and slabs. The data integrates material information such as timber type, timber grade, Young's modulus, density, and layer configuration with fabrication-related information such as robotic fabrication platforms, tasks, tools, and constraints.

Software and File-Opening Information

.ttl files can be opened with ontology and RDF tools such as Protégé, Apache Jena/Fuseki, RDF4J, GraphDB, or any plain text editor. They can also be loaded into RDF triple stores or SPARQL endpoints for querying and reasoning.

.csv files can be opened with spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice Calc, with plain text editors, or with data processing environments such as Python/pandas or R.

.3dm files can be opened with Rhinoceros 3D or compatible CAD/viewer software that supports the Rhino 3DM format.

.gh files can be opened with Grasshopper inside Rhinoceros 3D. The Grasshopper file is an executable visual programming workflow and is classified as code/workflow.

.txt files can be opened with any plain text editor. The Query Examples.txt file contains SPARQL query scripts and can be used in SPARQL-compatible tools or RDF triple stores after loading the corresponding RDF/Turtle data.

Third-Party Software and Dependencies

Third-party software and dependencies, including Rhino/Grasshopper, RDF processing tools, SPARQL engines, ontology editors, and reasoners, are not included in the dataset and must be obtained separately under their own licenses.

Intended Audience

The dataset is intended for researchers and practitioners working with Semantic Web technologies, knowledge graphs, robotic timber construction, design-to-fabrication workflows, and data interoperability in the Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operations sector.
