Video footage of the benthos and accompanying oceanographic CTD data recorded along a transect at station 19-10 of RV Meteor cruise M179/2 in the Canal Ballenero / Puerto Engaño (Tierra del Fuego, Chile)

DOI

A custom-built observation frame (ROVOS) based on Ocean Module V8Sii ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) technology was launched from RV Meteor and towed along a 235 m transect in the Ballenero Channel in front of Puerto Engaño, staring in a depth of 51 m progressing slope downward to a depth of 65 m. The sandy seabed is covered by stones and rocks with a dominating community of sessile sea cucumbers. The instrument was equipped with three cameras with different perspectives: one HD camera (Kongsberg oe14-502, 720p50) pointed isometrically forward at an angle of 22.5° to the horizon, the second 4k camera (SubC Imaging Mk6, 2160p25) was oriented downward and an observation camera (Bowtech L3C-650-L, 240p24) provided a low-resolution view forward. Environmental data was recorded with a CTD (RBR Maestro), which included sensors for chlorophyll a, turbidity, oxygen, pH and PAR in addition to standard instruments for conductivity, temperature and pressure. The position of the ROVOS was recorded with the ship's own Posidonia USBL. The global orientation with respect to magnetic north was determined with an internal IMU device. To determine the true image scale on the high-resolution footage, a series of reference lasers indicating 10 cm were used in addition to an altimeter (Tritech) providing acoustically measured heights from the SubC camera to the seabed (see metadata).
