The federal popular votes are an central part of Swiss politics. The Swiss Federal Statistical Office has therefore documented the results of the more than 400 federal popular votes since 1848 at cantonal level. In order to meet the public interest that the federal popular votes have experienced in recent years, the FSO began to record a few years ago the results of the last 100 referendums (since 1981) at the communal level and in electronic form. With the popular referendum on Switzerland's accession to the EEA, which was of great interest to the public and experts, the SFSO expanded its field of activity and published its first analysis on the vote. From 1996 on, the SFSO regularly publishes analyses on selected federal votes. With the help of aggregate data analysis, the different voting behavior - unlike opinion polls which predominantly use the individual characteristics and motives of the voters as explanatory variables - is being analysed in the context of the different social and economic structures and the political-ideological climate of the places of residence of the voters. All popular initiatives, counterproposals to initiatives, compulsory and optional referenda have been collected at the community level since 1981. There are currently 119 votes available (1996). The data collection is continually being supplemented.
Die Volksabstimmungen sind ein wesentlicher Bestandteil der schweizerischen Politik. Das Bundesamt für Statistik hat deshalb die Ergebnisse der mehr als 400 eidg. Volksabstimmungen seit 1848 auf der Ebene der Kantone dokumentiert. Um dem öffentlichen Interesse, welches die Volksabstimmungen in den letzten Jahren erfahren, Rechnung zu tragen, hat das BFS vor einigen Jahren damit begonnen, die Ergebnisse der letzten 100 Volksabstimmungen (seit 1981) auf Gemeindeebene und in elektronischer Form zu erfassen. Mit der die Öffentlichkeit und Expertenkreise stark interessierenden Volksabstimmung über den Beitritt der Schweiz zum EWR erweiterte das BFS sein Tätigkeitsfeld und publizierte seine erste Abstimmungsanalyse. Ab 1996 wird das BFS regelmässig Analysen zu ausgewählten eidgenössischen Vorlagen veröffentlichen. Mit Hilfe der Aggregatdatenanalyse wird das unterschiedliche Stimmverhalten – anders als bei Meinungsumfragen, die v.a. die individuellen Merkmalen und die Motive der Stimmberechtigten als Erklärungsvariablen heranziehen – mit den unterschiedlichen sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Strukturen und dem politisch-ideologischen Klima der Wohngemeinden der Stimmberechtigten in Beziehung gesetzt. Alle Volksinitiativen, Gegenvorschläge zu Initiativen, obligatorische und fakultative Referenda werden seit 1981 auf Gemeindeebene erhoben. Es sind im Moment 119 Abstimmungen vorhanden (1996). Die Datensammlung wird kontinuierlich ergänzt.
