Investigation of kinetic and fast dynamic processes in nanomaterials by innovative stroboscopic SANS

DOI

In the framework of a cooperation between the Universities of Köln, Saarbrücken/Luxembourg and the ILL, we propose to implement a new stroboscopic technique on D22. This technique, denoted as TISANE, will allow new types of fast in-situ SANS investigations of structural changes during kinetic and dynamical processes to be performed, which is the common aim of two research projects: The Saarbrücken group will study Brownian relaxation dynamics and magnetoviscosity in nanowire-based ferrofluids and magnetisation reversal in bulk nanomagnets, whereas the expansion induced transformation of supercritical droplet microemulsions into foam bubbles is in the focus of the Köln project. The time window of the relevant processes in both projects ranges from sub-milliseconds to minutes. The TISANE technique will allow the existing time gap to be closed between conventional SANS and inelastic neutron scattering. The investment and man-power is funded (800 k) by the German Ministry BMBF. The installation will be permanently operated by the ILL and is accessible to the whole user community.
