High-energy and spin-orbit transitions in MgV2O4:

DOI

We request time on the MAPS spectrometer to continue a previous experiment aimed at mapping out the spin and orbital fluctuations in MgV2O4 spinel. The main goal of the proposal is to directly measure the various single-ion energy scales and compare them with theory. We were previously successful in observing a mode at around 175 meV, however we wish to attempt to measure d-d excitations which are typically found at about 1 eV. Neutrons are ideal for this given the comparatively simple cross section (when compared with x-rays or nonlinear optics). The entire proposal requests 6 days on MAPS.
