A direct measurement of the spin orbit coupling in MgV2O4

DOI

We propose to directly measure the spin-orbit splitting of V3+ in dilute MgAl2O4 (with ~5% Vanadium). Spin orbit coupling is believed to play a major role in the physics and unusual properties of MgV2O4, however no direct measurement has been made. The spin orbit coupling is difficult to extract from single crystal measurements on the pure compound given that the coupling constant is of a similar value to the exchange constant. The experiment requests 5 days of time on MARI.
