2. Methods for processing the data:
To calculate Catalan potential of biomethane production five types of feedstocks are considered: livestock manure, agricultural residues, OFMSW, organic residues from agrifood industry, and sludge from WWTP.
To calculate the CH4 potential from livestock manure, the livestock census of 2022 was considered. Then, the share of stabled animals was calculated from the Catalan livestock farms registry.
The amount of manure production per animal has been obtained from Decree 153/2019, which was multiplied by the dry matter, the content of volatile solids, and the CH4 content in volatile solids of each type of residue.
To calculate the amount of available straw for biomethane production, the agricultural land allocated to cereals production was considered, which was multiplied by the productivity of each cereal to obtain the production quantities. This was multiplied by the residue-to-product ratio, the dry matter, the volatile solids, the biogas productivity from volatile solids, and the CH4 content.
The average of solid waste generation per capita of 2022 was considered, out of which 37% is organic fraction. This amount was multiplied by the population, the dry matter, volatile solids, biogas productivity from volatile solids, CH4 content and a collection ration of 55%.
The amount of organic waste from the agrifood industry has been obtained from Agència Catalana de Residus, at municipal level. This was multiplied by the dry matter, volatile solids, biogas productivity from volatile solids, and CH4 content.
The amount of sludge production at municipal level has been obtained from Agència Catalana de Residus, and multiplied by the dry matter, volatile solids, biogas productivity from volatile solids, and CH4.
This study considers plants of 5 MWhHCV (Megawatt-hour Higher Calorific Value) of power capacity (and operating 8,000 hours per year). It was estimated that each plant requires 8 direct and 10 indirect jobs.
Twenty-five-tonne trucks were considered to calculate the number of trucks required to transport feedstock
