Inelastic Neutron Scattering Investigations of Hydration Layers on Cobalt Oxide Nanoparticles.

DOI

We propose to collect INS data with TOSCA on nanoparticles of CoO and Co3O4 with different levels of hydration and size to study the effect of these parameters on the heat capacity and entropy of the water confined on the surface of the particles. There are two key objectives for this experiment: (i) to evaluate the thermodynamic properties of the hydration layers on CoO and Co3O4 nanoparticles. As both these materials are composed of the same elements this will permit us to assess the influence of nanoparticle structure on the properties of the hydration layers; (ii) to study the influence of Co3O4 nanoparticle size on the thermodynamics of the hydration layers. The results from this part of the experiment will be compared with TOSCA results for SnO2 to determine whether or not the variation in the spectra observed for different SnO2 particle sizes is a phenomenon unique to SnO2.
