The dataset contains the results of a Direct Numerical Simulation of a droplet impact onto a thin wall film (Hexadecane, air) performed with the ITLR inhouse program package Free Surface 3D (FS3D). The code solves the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a one-field formulation with a Volume of Fluid (VoF) approach, see related publication. The simulation was performed in three dimensions (1024³) and the dataset consists of a two-dimensional slice through the symmetry plane (1024²).
The data is saved in hdf5 files. For each timestep, there is one file storing the VoF-variable which is a scalar field with values between 0 and 1 indicating the phases being ambient gas (0) or drop liquid (1), (funs00.hdf). Additionally, there is another file for each timestep storing the velocity vector field, (velv00.hdf). In total there are 86 timesteps starting with the initial condition of the simulation (timestep 0).
The simulation was performed as part of the GKR 2160 within the subproject SP-C2.
