Magnetic properties of EuO/Fe interface

DOI

EuO is a model ferromagnet, with great potential in spintronics, but also of great interest from a theoretical point of view. Here we propose to study the magnetic proximity effect at an EuO/Fe interface. The first part of this project used muon spectroscopy at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The data shows that an unexpected magnetic order is present in the EuO film above the Curie temperature (TC) and also shows that the local field dynamics change as a function of depth from the EuO/Fe interface. This is relevant to our fundamental understanding of EuO and increases its relevance for potential technological applications. However, to fully understand the muon observations we require a quantitative determination of the magnetic moment and its depth distribution throughout the film as a function of temperature. Only polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) is able to supply this data.
