Samples processed with the following steps: 1 gram of the <45 µm sample is mixed with 0.25 grams of powdered, 99.9% pure corundum which serves as an internal standard. This mixture is round in a McCrone Micronizing mill for 5 minutes with 4 mL of methanol and subsequently ovendried at 80° C. The dried sample is sieved throught a 400-500 µm sieve for sample homogenization. The sample is milled for 10 minutes using three 10 mm acrylic balls in a ball mill to further enhance sample homogeneity. Next, 0.3 mL of hexane (roughly 0.5 mL per gram of clay) is added and the sample is mixed again for ten minutes in the ball mill. The second ball mill run is completed to ensure uniform sample homogenization and random dispersion of minerals. The sample is left to dry under a fume-hood and the dried sample is passed through the sieve again and side mounted in the XRD sample holder against frosted glass to help ensure random orientation. Each sample was analyzed on a PanAlytical X'Pert PRO XRD equipped with a Cu-tube from 5 to 65° 2Θ with 0.2° steps at 2 seconds per step (45 mA, 40 kV).
