Field induced quantum phase transition and excitations in ErI3

DOI

Magnetic ordering and the spin excitations in the rare-earth trihalide ErI3 are studies as a function of external field. As in the isostructural compound ErBr3, the ordering is dominated by dipolar interactions and leads to magnetic order below 250 mK. As a function of external field, the magnetic ordering undergoes a series of reentrant quantum phase transitions, interrupted by regions of disorder as has been demonstrated in preliminary experiments on TASP (SINQ). In the proposed experiment proposal we would like to investigate the so far inaccessible regime at high fields > 6 T and measure the inelastic excitations in the regime between 6 T and 9 T, where we expect at least one further quantum phase transition. The recent IN14 experiment was successful but restricted to fields < 6T as we had to use the 6T vertical magnet because of failure of the VTI in the brand new 10T magnet.
