Structure and magnetism in Sr2IrO4 - benefits of 193Ir use

We plan to investigate the use of the isotope 193Ir for studies of magnetism in iridium containing materials using Sr2IrO4 as a test case. This isotope is important for neutron diffraction studies of iridium containing compounds because it has a smaller absorption cross section than natural iridium. Sr2IrO4 is an important material in condensed matter physics, displaying a novel Jeff=½ Mott insulating state and being a rare comparative system for understanding the high temperature cuprate superconductors. We have already investigated the benefits of 193Ir in studying the crystal structure of Sr2IrO4 using HRPD to elucidate the details of the octahedral distortions (critical to the electronic structure and magnetism in this material). We will now investigate the use of 193Ir for improved studies of magnetism in iridium-containing compounds using WISH, again with Sr2IrO4 as a test case.
