Magnetic structure of magnetocaloric manganites

DOI

Magnetic cooling has recently become the focus of cooling system technology as it boasts important advantages in terms of power consumption and for the environment e.g. not releasing gases that are harmful to the ozone layer. For magnetic cooling, materials exhibiting a strong magnetocaloric effect (MCE) are required. Here we propose a full structural and magnetic characterisation of the (La1 xPrx)0.85Ag0.15MnO3 (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) system using powder neutron diffraction (PND). We plan to uncover the underlying magnetic structure, in particular the magnetic moments carried by the different ions and also whether there exists an antiferromagnetic phase at low temperatures. This will help us understand the microscopic origin of changes of the macroscopic MCE effect in (La1 xPrx)0.85Ag0.15MnO3.
