Asphaltene, the most polar fraction of petroleum crude oil, is present at concentrations that can vary from virtually zero to 20 % w/w depending on the oil origin. Asphaltene is responsible for numerous problems in the oil industry, such as the formation of water in crude oil emulsions (w/o) during production, transport, and processing of crude oils . In order to improve the methods to break emulsions, it is important to determine how asphaltene stabilizes them. Consequently, the goal of this study is to determine the conformation of asphaltenes at the interface between oil and water using silica surface as surrogate for water.
