Biospheric flux observations in Zurich, Paris and Munich

DOI

This deliverable is presenting an analysis on the in-situ datasets collected in WP3, Task 3.5 (T3.5): Urban biogenic flux observations. In this task, field observations were performed to be used as inputs to and parametrisations for the biogenic models (WP2) and independently to evaluate biogenic model performance. Such data are typically available in ICOS for different vegetation ecosystem types (e.g. forests, grasslands, crops), but not for vegetated urban areas. We focused on specific green areas of the three pilot cities in the vicinity of the atmospheric and eddy-covariance towers. In Zurich, the field measurements lasted for two years, while in Munich and Paris for one year. The selected sites were either urban parks, street alleys, urban canyons or urban forests. In Zurich 4 urban parks were selected, in Munich there were 3 urban parks, 1 street alley and 1 urban canyon, and in Paris the observations focussed on two separate sites: Romainville (1 park, 1 street alley) and Vincennes (urban forest, park/garden). The field measurements included the installation of PAR sensors, phenocams, soil sensors and autonomous sap flow stations. Moreover, measurements of soil respiration, lawn CO2 fluxes, tree leaf photosynthesis and leaf area index (LAI) were collected during repeated field campaigns. In this Deliverable we present an analysis of the in-situ datasets, attempting to derive conclusions on the effective monitoring of urban green area phenology, the seasonality and balance of soil and lawn CO2 fluxes, and the potential for detecting water stress effects on the urban trees.
