The Capital Stock Dataset is constructed by staff at the Virtual Microdata Laboratory (VML) based at the Office for National Statistics. The data are derived variables from the Annual Respondents Database (ARD) held under UK Data Archive SN 6644, and the Volume of Index of Capital Services (VICS). Industry investment data and the ARD’s capital expenditure figures are used to create an estimate of capital stock for each business in each year. IMPORTANT INFORMATION Users should take careful note that these data are derived, and are not responses from surveys. Caution should be exercised when using these data for analysis. Users are advised to read the available documentation before deciding whether to use the file as it stands or to adjust it using the options outlined in the documentation. ******** The capital stock estimates are calculated using the Perpetual Inventory Method. Separate depreciation rates are used for different asset types (plant and machinery, vehicles, and buildings, etc), industrial sectors and years. Capital stock is reported for each asset type and as an aggregate across all asset types. All years and industrial sectors are aggregated into one file. The dataset can be tailored by the user for their own purposes using the Stata syntax (.do) files that created the dataset. The ONS has designed the syntax to be very flexible so that users can easily create their own capital stock estimates by selecting from a range of key variables and methods. Linking to other business studies These data contain Inter-Departmental Business Register reference numbers. These are anonymous but unique reference numbers assigned to business organisations. Their inclusion allows researchers to combine different business survey sources together. Researchers may consider applying for other business data to assist their research.
