SDGSAT-1 Night-Time Lights Mosaic for Switzerland

DOI

This dataset provides a Swiss-wide mosaic of night-time lights, derived from SDGSAT-1 GLI satellite imagery. The mosaic contains median radiance values based on observations from winter 2023/24. Poor-quality images (due to factors such as clouds, inconsistent geometric accuracy or excessive noise) have been manually excluded.

The potential of SDGSAT-1 night-time lights data for ecological applications is discussed in Weber et al. (2025).

Two mosaic types are available -PAN Radiance (10 m resolution) with three bands: Panchromatic Low (PL), Panchromatic High (PH), and High Dynamic Range (HDR) -RGB Radiance (40 m resolution) with three bands: Red, Green, and Blue

Additional layers for PAN/RGB include -Number of observations per pixel (OBS) -Standard deviation of radiance values per pixel (SD)

Additional information -Radiance values were calculate based on the calibration values (gain, bias) V3.0 -Radiance values were converted to nW/cm^2/sr -Of the three panchromatic bands, HDR is recommended for use as it is the weighted average of 50% of the PL and PH data. -Access and more information about SDGSAT-1 data: sdgsat.ac.cn
