MuSR Study of Magnetically Frustrated Lu2Mo2(O,N)7 pyrochlores

DOI

The combination of magnetic frustration and low magnetic moment leads to non-classical magnetic behaviour such as spin liquid states. We have prepared polycrystalline samples of the S = 1 Lu2Mo2O7 pyrochlore and discovered an apparent spin freezing transition at 15 K. We have also prepared polycrystalline samples of a new S = 1/2 pyrochlore Lu2Mo2O5N2 by nitridation of Lu2Mo2O7. Magnetic susceptibility and powder neutron diffraction data show no evidence of spin freezing or magnetic long range order in Lu2Mo2O5N2 down to 1.5 K. We propose to perform a MuSR study on both of these materials in order to confirm the spin glass nature of Lu2Mo2O7 and to follow the evolution of spin fluctuations in Lu2Mo2O5N2 at the lowest possible temperatures in order to determine whether spins remain dynamic towards lowest temperatures.
