Frustration, quantum spin ices and quantum diffusion

DOI

This proposal aims to characterise the spin dynamics of three Pr-based pyrochlores that may be realisations of quantum spin ice materials. The lower moment and larger wave function of Pr3+ leads to a smaller barrier for tunnelling between ice configurations. The experiment also has a subsidiary aim to understand whether muon experiments on spin ice systems might be due to the quantum diffusion of the muon as recently proposed, and so a control experiment on non-magnetic Lu2Ti2O7 is also proposed.
