Magnetic Excitation Spectrum of the Frustrated Antiferromagnet SrYb2O4

DOI

In SrYb2O4 the magnetic Yb3+ ions form sub-lattices of double chains running parallel to the crystallographic c-axis with frustrated first and second neighbour antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, furthermore the coupling between the chains is also frustrated. The Curie-Weiss temperature (Tcw=99K) is much bigger than the Néel temperature (TN = 0.965 K) suggesting a suppression of order due to the frustration and one-dimensionality. While heat capacity provides evidence of short range correlations extending up to 10K. Previous inelastic neutron measurement perfomed above the Neel temperature at 1.5K shows substantial diffuse magnetic scattering. Here we propose to measure the magnetic excitations in the magnetically ordered phase in order to understand the nature of the frustrated magnetism in this compound.
